Day and night changes in energy expenditure of patients on automated peritoneal dialysis

چکیده
Rationale Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) treatment for end-stage kidney disease affords patients a degree of autonomy in everyday life. Clinical investigations their energy expenditure (EE) are usually based on resting EE, which could mask day and night variations EE. The aim this study, therefore, was to compare the components EE APD healthy control (C) subjects. Material method Patients treated with more than 3 months were compared C volunteers matched age lean body mass (LBM). Biochemical analyses performed composition determined by DEXA adjust LBM. Total its different respiratory quotients (RQ) measured gas exchange calorimetric chambers. Spontaneous total activity-related (AEE) also free-living conditions over 4 days calibrated accelerometer heart rate monitor. Results (n = 7) did not differ composition. REE between two groups. However, prandial increase adjusted dietary intake higher (+57.5 ± 12.71 kcal/h) subjects (+33.8 10.5 kcal/h, p 0.003) nocturnal decrease tended be lower undergoing sessions (- 4.53 8.37 11.8 7.69 0.059). Resting RQ (0.91 0.09 vs 0.81 0.04, 0.032) significantly patients, indicating preferential use glucose substrate potentially absorbed across peritoneum. AEE (595.9 383.2 kcal/d) (1205.2 370.5 kcal/d, 0.011). In contrast, intakes (1986 465 2083 377 0.677). Conclusion Although groups had identical

Developing a Device for Automated Peritoneal Dialysis
Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an efficient alternative for hemodialysis. Removal of waste metabolites and excess water from the blood circulation are the two main tasks done during dialysis. These are done by using a filter; in PD, the naturally semi-permeable peritoneal membrane acts as the filter. Automated PD machines control intelligently the operations to enhance the efficiency a...
متن کاملComparison of Marital Satisfaction in Hemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis Patients
Alternative kidney treatments, including renal transplantation, hemodialysis (HD), and peritoneal dialysis (PD), are administered when severe kidney failure occurs and the kidney can no longer function. The present study compares different dimensions of marital satisfaction in HD and PD patients so as to assist physicians and patients in choosing their appropriate treatment. This cross-se...
متن کاملEnergy intake and expenditure profile in chronic peritoneal dialysis patients complicated with circulatory congestion.
BACKGROUND Circulatory congestion is an adverse predictor of mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the nutritional status, energy intake, and expenditure profile of PD patients with and without previous circulatory congestion. DESIGN We conducted a cross-sectional study in 244 PD patients, of whom 92 had previous circulatory congestion. We estimated ...
متن کاملResting energy expenditure and subsequent mortality risk in peritoneal dialysis patients.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in ESRD patients and is strongly associated with malnutrition. The mechanism of malnutrition is not clear, but hypermetabolism is suggested to contribute to cardiac cachexia. This study examined resting energy expenditure (REE) in relation to the clinical outcomes of ESRD patients who receive continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) t...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Automated Peritoneal Dialysis Compared to Outpatient Procedure: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Study
Introduction: The growing trend of renal failure has focused clinical therapy on the cost-effective alternatives such as peritoneal dialysis. Therefore, the present study has investigated the effectiveness of two methods of continuous and automatic peritoneal dialysis in the patients with end stage renal disease. Methods: This study was conducted in the form of a systematic review. Advanced se...
